Matière et Manière
Josiane Guitard-Leroux studied philosophy, aesthetics and visual arts at Sorbonne University Paris I, (Master 2 in visual arts, Master 1 in philosophy and agrégation in visual arts).
After working with paper, in particular weaving, her own hair became an integral part of her artistic practice.
Fascinated by this strange and demanding medium, she has devoted the last twenty-five years to revealing its plastic possibilities.
Collected daily as it falls naturally, and occasionally when it's cut, her hair is sorted by length and color, and associated with supports or materials that have a history, a past.
She creates installations and regularly exhibits her work 2 to 5 times a year in France and abroad.
Josiane has created a specific vocabulary around the Trikho root from the Greek Trix, meaning hair:
-Trikhotage stands for crocheted hair chains.
-Trikhographies are signs made up of small pieces of hair.
-Trikhothèque is the collection of over a thousand locks of hair that the public have exchanged with their hair in site-specific installations, or given to them in exhibitions.
- Trikhographic performances took place in the presence of the public, every year from 2001 to 2012.
-Trikhoteuse is the adjective that defines her as a visual artist.
-Trikholand is the territory of exploration for her creations.
After extensive research into the symbolism and role of hair in various ritual and artistic productions, both geographically and culturally, Josiane has written an "Abécéd'hair passionné des cheveux". Attached to this organic element with its many and varied qualities, she is committed to deciphering its language. Curiosity drives her further in this adventure and guides her artistic practice towards what's important to her: the unexpected.
Her travels in Asia, Europe and Africa are a breeding ground in which the forms of her plastic productions germinate.
To this spatial dimension is added the temporal dimension of the creative process, which is an essential part of her artistic approach. Josiane Guitard-Leroux practices as she meditates, with as much attention to doing as to feeling.
Her works invite evocation, escape and reflection.
