Experimentation with materials and pigments by Alexandra Pasqualini

It was long after Alexandra Pasqualini had lost her way at the Beaux Arts school in Bourges and obtained her DNAP, where she oscillated between volume and painting, that she discovered papermaking. Today, Alexandra Pasqualini is 52 years old and works as an after-school animator, leaving her plenty of time for her personal creations.

Her artistic life can be divided into three periods. Her immersion at the Beaux Arts school in Bourges until she was 22, followed by a love affair that led to the birth of 2 children, then a first discovery in 2008 when she led recycled paper workshops with children, where she discovered a basic papermaking technique. A third child followed in 2012, and in 2018 Alexandra resumed her experimentation with all kinds of materials: vegetables, plants... to create her paper sheets.

Today, Alexandra Pasqualini mainly makes recycled paper, to which she adds earth and plants. She uses the paper sheets as a support for her ink drawings. Alexandra is sensitive to global warming, excessive wood consumption and deforestation. Her work pays homage to the tree, raising awareness of the need to preserve our forests. Alexandra Pasqualini?s work is an emotional quest that she wishes to transmit to the public, through the medium of paper, in a cycle from the living tree to the tree that has become paper. Paper becomes the tree's memory.

So Alexandra experiments with vegetables, plants, cardboard and cotton to produce leaves. She makes paper paste in a vat, spreads it on small boards and presses them, then reassembles the leaves to create large surfaces of life. An operation she repeats several times using recycled paper. Then she superimposes the sheets of paper, tears them, flays them, and soaks them in inks, coffee and vegetable dyes. Forest scents emanate from her paper mush. Nature is reborn, a space Alexandra explores with her senses on the alert, in search of beings.

She's not trying to reproduce trees, as others do so magnificently. She's on an emotional quest. The exhilaration that emanates from a single stroke of dynamic drawing, or from a vein of paper revealed beneath the ink. That moment when you have to lift the brush at the risk of drowning the emotion.

Alexandra doesn't know whether she's a painter, a draughtswoman, an artist or a craftswoman, or which artistic movement she draws her inspiration from. She's the one who doesn't fit into any box. Alexandra follows the wind in the trees, the samara that twirls and germinates as she meets new people, notably in the paper workshops she leads. Alexandra is the one who tastes the freedom she finds in the forest, where her being exults.

This freedom is partly due to her awareness of the need to preserve the natural environment, our woods...

And if sometimes mushrooms encrust her painting, it's still to observe life.
