Until April 1917, only a handful of American volunteers were engaged in the Foreign Legion or certain medical units to help the allies. The entry of the United States into the war gives a new dimension to the world conflict. From now on, it is the whole American nation and economic power that will weigh in the balance of an interminable conflict.
