On July 14, 1918, the French national holiday, Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt, son of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, was shot down over the village of Chamery while piloting his fighter plane at the age of just 21. Moved by his identity, the German soldiers paid him a solemn tribute, burying him where he fell, in front of an honor guard of nearly a thousand men. As a token of gratitude to the people of Chamery who had watched over her son?s grave, Mrs. Roosevelt donated a fountain, erected on the site of the old watering hole, in memory of Quentin.
