The Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial is the second largest place of worship in Europe. It stands on the site where the 42nd Rainbow Division fought. The Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial is the second largest place of worship in Europe. It stands on the site where the 42nd Rainbow Division fought. It was the last refuge of 6,013 American soldiers, most of whom sacrificed their lives in the fierce fighting of 1918, during the First World War. The soberly beautiful 36.5-acre site, with its rows of headstones and divided into four sections by rose- and tree-lined paths, leads to the memorial, where the names of the missing are engraved, some of them recovered. A wall map shows the military operations in the region in 1918, reminding us of the scale of the sacrifice and heroism of these men - a trace of the pain, but also of the courage and hope of a generation that did not see the end of the war. A day of remembrance is "Memorial Day", which takes place in the afternoon of the last Sunday in May. Open all year round from 9:00 to 17:00 (except 25/12 and 01/01)
