"2024 will have been a particularly important year for Château-Thierry?s archaeology unit. Two major preventive archaeological digs will have been carried out, in Place de l?Hôtel-de-Ville and Rue Robert Lecart, as well as a number of diagnostic operations (ANRU project in Les Vaucrises, works supervision in Rue Tortue, Rue de Tillancourt and Rue des Fusiliers, continuing archaeological monitoring at Jean de La Fontaine?s birthplace). These numerous research projects have enabled us to collect data on an unprecedented scale. The excavation of the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville provided new insights into the structure and evolution of the town of Château-Thierry. Excavations at Les Vaucrises offer interesting insights into the shape of the ancient settlement, urban modules and artisanal activities, as well as into earlier Gallic settlement. The
the diagnosis of the house where Jean de La Fontaine was born revealed some surprising archaeological elements, such as a mammoth tusk hidden in a concealed fireplace.
The year 2024 will also have seen the Conseil National de la Recherche Archéologique examine UACT?s first five-year report on its activities since obtaining its accreditation as a preventive archaeology operator."
