Belleau, "Belleau Wood" or "Belleauwood" to our American allies. A village name like any other, except that since June 1918, it has been a leitmotif in American hearts. Indeed, it was one of the most important battles in the history of the United States Marine Corps. The battle of Bois Belleau, because of the feats of arms of the Second Infantry Division that took part in it, is a landmark in the history of the US Marines. While journalists were usually kept away from the fighting, one reporter was there, among the Marines. By publishing his story on the other side of the Atlantic, he made the reputation of this most popular of corps. It was also during this battle that the Marines chose their mascot, a bulldog, named after the Germans who were attacked, impressed by these teufel-hunden (wild dogs) and their fierceness in battle.
