Eglise Saint-Etienne de Belleau

During World War I, the church in Belleau was destroyed. General Edwards, commander of the 26th Infantry Division, declared that it should be rebuilt. Each man in the division donated a day's pay to rebuild the church near the American cemetery. The cornerstone of the church was laid by the Bishop of Soissons on December 23, 1928 and it was consecrated on October 10, 1929. Upon its completion, it was donated to the village of Belleau. The church is closed but keys are available at the American cemetery or at the town hall. However, a service is held the day before Memorial Day (May)
